….I moved to Ottawa in 2008 to become a professor in Carleton’s music department. ..J’ai déménagé à Ottawa en 2008 pour prendre un poste de professeur à l’École de musique de l’Université Carleton. ….

….How would you describe your artistic practice/discipline? ..Comment décririez-vous votre art? ….

….My creative practice is multi- and interdisciplinary. It includes music composition/improvisation/performance, performance art, video, sculpture, installation-based work, sound art. Working with found objects is a central part of my practice in both the visual and sonic arts. ..Ma pratique artistique est multidisciplinaire et interdisciplinaire. On y trouve un travail de composition, d’improvisation et de performance musicale, ainsi que de la performance artistique, des œuvres vidéographiques, de la sculpture, des œuvres centrées sur des installations, et de l’art sonore. Le travail avec des objets trouvés est un axe central de ma pratique dans les arts visuels et sonores. ….

….What impact has your involvement with the arts/the Ottawa arts community had on your life? ..Quel impact a eu votre implication dans la communauté des arts d’Ottawa sur votre vie? ….

….I feel as though my life is richer because of my involvement with the Ottawa arts community. I have made many new friends, and I am consistently inspired by the work of my peers. ..J’ai l’impression que ma vie est plus riche grâce à mon implication dans la communauté des arts d’Ottawa. Je me suis fait de nombreux nouveaux amis et le travail de mes pairs m’inspire constamment. ….

….Is there a specific moment/situation in your art career that you remember fondly? ..Y a-t-il eu un moment particulièrement important, ou un souvenir qui vous soit particulièrement cher, dans votre parcours d’artiste? ….

….I have so many fond memories. Some highlights on the musical side include: performing for the Dalai Lama; performing inside the skeleton of the blue whale at the Canadian Museum of Nature; performing with Michael Snow at the National Gallery and at Gigspace on his 89th birthday; and participating in the Ontario Scene and Canada Scene Festivals at the National Arts Centre. I have also really enjoyed writing and performing music for various collaborative projects with Propeller Dance and Ottawa Dance Directive. ..J’ai la tête remplie de bons souvenirs. Parmi les moments forts sur le plan musical, je pourrais citer jouer pour le Dalaï-Lama, jouer à l’intérieur du squelette de la baleine bleue au Musée canadien de la nature, jouer avec Michael Snow au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada et à Gigspace à l’occasion de ses 89 ans, et participer aux festivals Scène Ontario et Scène Canada au Centre national des Arts. J’ai également beaucoup aimé composer et jouer de la musique lors de divers projets de collaboration avec Propeller Dance et le Centre de danse contemporaine. ….

....On the visual art side, some highlights include: working on the “The Listening Tree” with Mixed Metaphors (a creative partnership with architect Matt Edwards) and installing it at St. Luke’s Park at the corner of Elgin and Gladstone; having solo exhibitions at the Karsh Masson Gallery in 2011 and at the Ottawa Art Gallery in 2019; and, of course, receiving the Mid-Career Artist Award from the Ottawa Arts Council! ..Pour ce qui est des arts visuels, parmi mes bons souvenirs figurent notamment travailler avec Mixed Metaphors (dans le cadre d’un partenariat artistique avec l’architecte Matt Edwards) sur « l’arbre écoute » qui est installé au parc St-Luke, à l’angle d’Elgin et de Gladstone. J’ai également exposé seul à la galerie Karsh-Masson en 2011 et à la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa en 2019. Et, bien sûr, recevoir le Prix des artistes à mi-carrière du Conseil des arts d’Ottawa! ….

….Working with Hasi Eldib on his 2019 documentary “Rich Tapestries: the Ongoing Story of WAAM” was another genuine highlight. ..La collaboration avec Hasi Eldib sur son documentaire de 2019. « Rich Tapestries: the Ongoing Story of WAAM », a été un autre véritable moment fort. ….

….Perhaps my fondest memory of all has been working with the students and educators at Regina Street Alternative School on the “Mud Lake Symphony” project, which culminated in 2018 with a performance of “Mud Lake Symphony” with students from the school and the National Arts Centre Orchestra at the National Art Centre. ..Mon souvenir le plus cher est peut-être ma collaboration avec les élèves et éducateurs de la Regina Street Alternative School sur le projet « Mud Lake Symphony », dont le point d’orgue a été la présentation de l’œuvre en 2018 au Centre national des arts avec les élèves de l’école et l’Orchestre du Centre national des arts. ….

….Do you have any advice for artists in the Ottawa community or artists in general? ..Avez-vous des conseils pour les artistes d’Ottawa ou les artistes en général? ….

….Personally, I think there is value in diversifying one’s creative practice, so I would recommend against narrow specialization. In addition, I think artists should make a point of supporting one another to the greatest extent possible (by going to exhibitions and performances, by writing about one another’s work, by collaborating with one another, etc.) in order to foster a greater sense of community. ..Personnellement, je pense qu’il est utile de diversifier sa pratique artistique, c’est pourquoi je déconseille de s’enfermer dans une spécialité. En outre, je pense que les artistes devraient s’efforcer de se soutenir mutuellement dans la plus large mesure possible (en assistant à des expositions et à des performances, en écrivant sur le travail d’autres artistes, en collaborant, etc.) pour nourrir l’esprit de communauté. ….

….I am currently building some new musical instruments, some of which are designed to be used by persons with limited motor control. In addition, Mixed Metaphors (Matt Edwards and I) are the artists-in-residence at Canadensis Garden this summer. We are working on some sculptures for the garden and are preparing for some performances and workshops that will take place there. ..Je fabrique actuellement de nouveaux instruments de musique, dont certains sont conçus pour être utilisés par des personnes qui ont un contrôle moteur limité. De plus, Matt Edwards et moi, c’est-à-dire Mixed Metaphors, sommes les artistes en résidence au Jardin Canadensis cet été. Nous travaillons sur des sculptures pour le jardin, et nous préparons des performances et des ateliers qui auront lieu sur place. ….

….Receiving the Mid-Career Artist Award from the Ottawa Arts Council was a genuine honour. It has already impacted my career, opening numerous doors in the art world. ..Recevoir le Prix des artistes à mi-carrière du Conseil des arts d’Ottawa a été un véritable honneur. Il a déjà eu des effets positifs sur ma carrière en m’ouvrant de nombreuses portes dans le monde de l’art. ….
